About the USAC Categories
Racing age is your age as of December 31st. In USAC mountain bike licensing, a racer can choose which category they want to race in. So anyone can race Cat 1 with the fast guys if they want to. Cat 1 is the experienced category; Cat 2 is intermediate, and Cat 3 novice. In the XC Series, Cat 1/2 race 34-36 miles and the Cat 3 race 24-26 miles. For the Marathon Discipline, all categories race the same distance. Juniors race an age appropriate distance in the Junior XC categories. For Breckenridge all Categories race together. Cat 2 and 3 can purchase an annual or $10 one-day license, whereas a Cat 1 must purchase an annual or $25 one-day (Cat 1 one-day license is called an “experienced one-day” and must be purchased on-line only through USAC and not available to purchase through bikereg like the Cat 2 and 3 one-day fee).
There are 5 age groups for Juniors. For the 15-16 and 17-18 groups, they are separated into two USAC skill levels – Cat 1,2 and Cat 3.
These different skill levels race different distances. They both receive State Championship Points. The other age groups are same skill level category and race the same distance. If a Junior wants a longer distance than the age group they are in, they can ‘race up in age’ to the next age group and distance.
